INDUSTRY VISIT FOR STUDENTS OF JD INSTITUTE, SILIGURI
INDUSTRY VISIT FOR STUDENTS OF JD INSTITUTE, SILIGURI“Love for Learning” drives Jediiians. Fashion Design students from JD Institute, Siliguri made a wonderful effort to visit New Delhi and understand how textile and garment industries work. They not only got a practical exposure to the massive scale of production for international brands but were able to relate their classroom studies to the actual scenario.
Excited students made an early start from Hauz Khas Village to move to Hosiery Complex, Noida which is an industrial hub. They visited Super Fashions Limited, a 100% export oriented unit supplying to renowned labels like Zara, Lucky, Free People, Anthropologie and many more. They have recently been approved for H&M as well.
The visit started with the fabric department where Jediiians learned about the 4-point system of fabric checking. They saw different fabric qualities and learnt about gsm and fabric defects. Then, they were taken to the cutting department where they saw straight blade and band knife cutting machines. They also saw how the fusing machine works. They witnessed the layering of fabric and learned about ticketing and bundling processes. They also learnt about the importance of markers in production.
The next department that the students visited was the sewing department where they learnt about the assembly line process of garment manufacturing. Students were exposed to different industrial sewing machines like lockstitch, overlock, flatlock, buttoning, buttonholing, bartacking etc. Quality is an important part of the entire manufacturing process. Students have explained the role of inline and end-of-the-line checkers.
Then, the students moved to the finishing section and learnt about thread cutting, final checking, spot removal, ironing, finishing and labelling. They saw the functioning of the needle detector machine in the packing section and updated their knowledge of barcodes and carton markings in the packing section.
Students also got a chance to see the factory’s showroom and gain knowledge of the wide variety of garment designs. They had a chance to meet with the Merchandising Manager and our alumni, Prerna Chaudhry who is working there as an intern. They asked a lot of questions and had a fruitful interactive session with them.
JD Institute encourages students from all its 36 centres to avail opportunities for industry visits to get a better understanding of all processes. This makes the student’s industry ready and more suited for jobs in merchandising and production.
