Where to Start to Become a Fashion Designer?

The first and foremost thing you need to know is the fact that any student who aspires to become a fashion designer must be formally trained in a reputable institute in a course of 3 to years and should have a degree at the end of the term. The benefits of getting trained by a reputed fashion designing institute are many, but one of the most important is the fact that the chances of getting hired after graduating are much brighter in a reputable institute than others.

Another important aspect, that anyone who aspires to become a fashion designer should know is that they should form a growth and creative mindset from the very beginning. Forming a growth and creative mindset from the very beginning is important because there are certain specific subjects needed for fashion designing after 10th and forming a mindset early in life can really help set the path for success later in life.

What to Choose When You are in School?

These days most students in India are well aware of what they want to become later in life, by the time they reach their 10th standard in school. Thus knowing what they aspire to become helps in choosing subjects wisely and passionately.

While in 10th, students should always choose Arts as their primary choice of subjects, if they want to create a career in fashion designing later in life. Similarly in the 11th grade, a steady inclination towards subjects covering Arts will help them better adapt to the courses in fashion designing schools.

While the specific fashion designing subjects list varies from college to college, all of them in general have the following list of courses:

  1. Creative design
  2. Pattern drafting
  3. Fashion illustration
  4. Fashion and art
  5. Fitting

Furthermore depending on the institute a student chooses, each of the above general subjects may cover:

  1. History of fashion designing.
  2. Trends
  3. Youth fashion market
  4. Equipment
  5. Fabrics and Raw materials
  6. Tools and Materials
  7. Clothing Designing
  8. Product Making
  9. Pattern making by hand
  10. Illustrations
  11. Surface ornamentation

While most students are unaware of this, the fashion designing courses in India branch out to different sectors over the course of a year. For example, there is an entirely separate section for the garment industry, while there is a similar one for the graphic designing sector as well.

Graphics in Fashion Designing

While there are multiple options to choose from, once one enrolls in a fashion designing school, one of the most popular choices among students is to study about the graphics involved in fashion designing. But many don’t know about the many branches of the subject and thus end up getting confused at what to choose and how to go about and succeed in it.

In graphic designing there are 5 main branches and all of them work both independently as well as in unison to make a great fashion designer.

Mentioned below is a run down of all the courses and other relevant details.

Construction Basics Course: As the name suggests, the Construction Basics Course involves an introduction at how various textiles are used in fashion designing and how various tailored garments are made. Students enrolled in this course learn how to cut, seam, stitch various different textiles and clothes to make a complete product. Students get to learn about the different types of fabric involved in garment designing and how a slight alteration in either stitching or cutting can create a truly unique design.

Textiles Course: As the name suggests, this course revolves around the different types of textiles used in the fashion designing industry. Students enrolled in this course get to learn the different types of materials used and how natural and man made textiles have evolved over the years. They also get introduced to working with fabrics like silk, cotton and wool.

Pattern Making Course: This course is a part of the first subjects in most universities and involves teaching students how to make a master pattern which can be used in a variety of garments. Here students undergo a training which teaches them the basics of pattern designing, what rules and regulations to follow and how a slight difference in conventional pattern designs can create a truly unique creation.

Computer Assisted Drawing (CAD) Course: Second to only the portfolio creation course, the CAD course is one of the most important subjects in fashion designing. The importance and significance of this subject lies in the fact that technology and the use of advanced drawing and designing softwares is a must to thrive in any competitive industry such as fashion designing. Scholars enrolled in this course are taught technical design stipulations, vocabulary and the basics of using CAD. Students usually get to learn this subject in the second year of their fashion designing program.

Portfolio Development Course: Although the mention of this course has been saved for the last, this subject is undoubtedly the most important for any fashion designing student. The importance of this course is so high because, this teaches them how to create a portfolio and exhibit all the skills and training they have received over the course of 4 years. Students get to understand perceptive learning on how to design and put together a collection, as well as presentation of the photographs.

Students will also work with runway productions and learn about fitting models, choosing show music and other features of creating a fashion show.
